  • Spelling tests will be given each week and students who receive 80% or better will move on to the next set if words.

Parent Survey- Questions for the Teacher
I'd like to take this moment to answer as many questions as I can from the survey's that parents filled out during parent orientation. Hopefully this will shine some light on any questions you might have and possibly help any other parent who might be wondering the same thing. If there are any other questions...please feel free to email me.

Q: How can we get our child to have leadership opportunities?
A: We have class elections where students can nominate a classmate for a leadership job such as class president, vice president, mediator, etc. Students nominate and vote for those roles. We also will be having Friday clubs and opportunities where students can form a club, volunteer to help in E1 classrooms or in the library, music, computer science classes.

Q: How can we encourage or give our child more advanced math?
A: I spend August doing different assessments and observing students and where they are at in math. If they master concepts quickly and need more challenging work, I will put them in a separate math group that is more to their level. Students who are extremely advanced may test into Ms. Clare's High math groups. I also have a variety of online math resources that students can practice in class and at home to keep them engaged and challenged.

Q: How are math lessons conducted
A: I typically give math lessons by grade level BUT there are times where students need to be in their own individual or small math group based off of being higher or lower in math. Students will have 3 math practice cards to complete weekly based off the concepts they receive lessons that week or past concepts they need to review. Any student who needs additional support in math will usually see Ms. Clare 1-2x a week for additional math support (what is called Tier 2 or Tier 3 math) in concepts they might be struggling with.

Q: Math Level Skills
A: There can be math levels ranging from 3rd grade-8th grade level. I am able to help students who struggle with some math concepts but also push other students who are ready for higher level math. Any student who is ready for middle school level math will meet with Ms. Clare daily for math using our middle school math program.

Q: How often do we do assessment tests?
A: We give assessments 3x a year in August, December, April

Q: How do students resolve conflicts in our class?
A: I will usually pull the student aside and ask them how they would like to resolve the situation. Sometimes I can give them advice or they can have a courageous conversation with that specific student with a class mediator(s) or teacher present, or depending on the situation, we would have a class meeting that the students are in charge of and we resolve the conflict as a whole.

Q: What are the Specials and when do the students have them?
A: Mon AM- Science with Ms. Emily and PE with Coach EJ and his staff (held        by class)
Wed PM- PE, Art, Computer science or Music (held by grade level)

Q: What is the homework expectation for students
A: Students should be doing a math lesson daily with parents checking and initialing your child's work. Students should also be reading 20min daily with a goal of trying to complete a specific genre a month and giving a book talk after a book is completed. For students who do not turn in their homework each day, there is a study hall where they can work on their missed homework during recess time. For students who are behind in homework, Ms. Clare holds a homework session every Friday afternoon for any E2 student who needs to get caught up on their homework. Students are expected to keep up with their daily homework and weekly math tests are given that coincide with the 5 lessons your child is expected to complete. Parent phone calls are made for students who are 3 lessons behind in homework and any student who is 5 lessons behind will have Ms. Christy set up a parent meeting in order to put a plan together to get your child caught up.

Q: Reading Group Opportunities
A: We will be having whole class Novel Study and small group literature study circles that will either be by grade level or book choice. Our goal is to also hold book clubs with other students from other classes at least 1x this year.

Q: Tools we use to help students manage their anxiety or stress
A: We have a peace area where students can sit and breathe, students are given short breaks (read, draw, or move around) and can at times take a 2-5min walk with a peer or teacher. We just encourage students to advocate for themselves so that we can find the best ways for students to manage the situation.

Q: Time management Skills
A: We give students 30min of silent work time so that they can use that moment to focus on independent work. We also have timers for any student who needs it. I encourage students to goal plan daily so that they have specific work to focus on and I can help them manage how much time they are spending on a specific work. We also have class mentors that help guide students to try to keep them on track.

Q: Favorite subject to teach
A: My favorite subject to teach is grammar although most students don't like it.         LOL!!

Q: Do we teach Sex Education
A: We do not teach sex education, but it is taught at our middle school program

Q: Is class work daily, weekly, or quarterly?
A: Students are given a Big Picture that has anywhere from 12-20 works a week. They should be setting daily goals to complete 3-4 works daily which would help your child achieve completing their Big Picture by the end of the week. There are at times, some work that will take 2-3 weeks to complete which are typically small group projects. If a student is given a lesson, they will have a follow up that they should complete and be ready to turn in either by that Friday or by the next time we meet for our next lesson in that subject. For some students who are ready, I will give a monthly Big Picture, where they pick and choose from a month's worth of work to complete each week.

Q: Overnight trips
A: We go on an overnight trip in Spring, typically in May. The overnight trips are 3 days and 2 nights. We ask for parent overnight chaperones, and there is a lottery we conduct when choosing the chaperones. Depending on where we go, we typically take a charter bus and go with another class. This year we will be going to Camp Way and going with Ms. Morgan's class. Dates for that trip are TBD. There is a cost for overnight trips and any family who needs financial help with the trip cost is encouraged to ask for a partial or full scholarship if you qualify. Parent Overnight Chaperones do have to pay for the overnight trip as well.

Hope this was helpful!!! Again, if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

August 11th Newsflash

Happy Monday!!! I hope everyone had a good weekend and ready for the second week of school. Students are doing a great job of getting adjusted to the classroom and the systems we are putting in place and they have really stepped up in working hard to set a good example for the class. I'm proud to say that the 4th graders are adapting well, but will most likely take about 2-3 months to become fully comfortable with the E2 transition.  I know that change can be hard, I'm grateful that so far everyone is working together to really help make each day run smoothly.

On another note, last week we held a nomination and silent voting for class leadership roles for the 1st quarter and I am happy to announce the following students who have been voted into a leadership role but a very big congratulations to all of the students who were nominated. Your classmates saw strong qualities that put you in the running, so you should be proud.

Class Leadership Roles

President: Nina
Vice President: Hudson
Diplomat/Mediator: Nora
Ms. Shawn's Classroom Assistants: Ruby and Vivienne

Parent Orientation

Thank you to those who were able to attend the parent orientation last week. If you were unable to attend the Parent Orientation, we sent home a folder with your child that included the packet of information for you to look over.

Pizza Friday

If you would like your child to participate in Pizza Friday and you have not already turned in the Pizza Friday form or payment, please make sure to do so by August 22nd. Tomorrow, I will send home the forms for any student who needs it.

Homework

Math: Review packet, Monday was due today. Your child should complete a lesson a day.

Reading: 20min of reading daily and fill out reading log

August Book Genre: Free Choice

When your child finishes the book they are reading in the month of August, they should prepare to give a book talk to the class. Most book talks will take place the last week of the month or the beginning of the next month.

The first homework packet of the year was passed out on Friday. It is a review packet. Please make sure to check and initial your child's homework daily.

Tomorrow, I will send home a homework calendar to help you keep track of when each lesson is due.

Students should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out the reading log for your records. The goal is for students to focus on reading a book a month. I will put up a monthly genre so that your child can experience different types of literature.

This year students will go to Study Hall if they miss a homework assignment. If you would like to opt-put of Study Hall please email Christy Cantu, [email protected], with your request and how you will help your student make up their missed homework.

Enrichments

The Enrichment Fair was held on Friday, so your child may have expressed interest in an after school activity. Online registration for E2 Enrichments is open this Wednesday, August 13th at 7pm. ENRICHMENT REGISTRATION | Villa Montessori School

Ms. Leticia's August 4th Newsflash

August 4, 2025

Happy first day of school! Please refer to this class Newsflash weekly to see what is happening in the classroom. Today was a wonderful but busy day. Students got their supplies sorted and we were able to go over some class expectations and goals. This week will be filled with student assessments, team building, student mentor groups along with some work time. For any new students to the class (4th graders), the E2 process will be different from E1 but just know that with patience and time, it will get easier. I'm looking to my 5th and 6th graders to step into huge leadership roles within the classroom setting, leading by example and being strong mentors to their peers.

A couple of reminders:

  • Only students in the Circle program should be dropped-off before 7:45 am in the morning. Everyone else can be dropped-off between 7:45 am – 8:30 am. Pick-up is between 3:00 pm – 3:30 pm.
  • We want to encourage independence of the students, in the morning they should have their lunchbox and backpack ready and able to exit the car on their own. If you will be coming on campus you need to get a visitor badge through the main office, this applies to afterschool hours as well.
  • Please use grace and courtesy during carline drop-off and pick-up. The first couple weeks will be busier than usual. Please refrain from using your cell phone and only exit out of the designated areas (no one should be exiting or picking up off of Meadowbrook Ave.) Also be mindful of students walking and using extra caution for safety.

Parent Orientation: We will be having our Parent Orientation night this Thursday, August 7th at 6:30 pm in the classroom, Room 204. We ask that at least one parent attends the orientation, if you are unable to attend, we will send home your Parent Orientation packet in your student’s communication folder on Friday.

Homework: Summer Homework should be turned in this week, and if there is any portion of summer homework not completed, your child should use this week to complete it.

Book Talks have begun. Students should have read and completed one book report project this summer. Today, I sent home book talk forms/rubrics with any student who requested one. Each student signed up for a day this week in which they would like to present. Please make sure your child is prepared for their 5-10min book talk, which is a summary and review of the book they read along with an explanation of the project they created.

Math: Review Packet will be sent home this Friday, August 8th. A calendar for homework due dates will also be set home or you can find a copy under the tab Homework Calendar.

Reading: We encourage students to read about 20min daily at home. The goal is to complete a book every month and to present a book talk each time a book is finished.

Pizza Friday
We will continue our Pizza Friday tradition this school year. Pizza Friday will start Friday, August 29th. If you would like for your child to participate in Pizza Friday please return the Pizza Friday form with payment on or before August 22nd. Half payment ($75) or Full payment ($150) can be made out by check to Leticia Hector, Venmo @Leticia-Hector or Cash App $LeticiaMHector

May 19th Class Newsflash

Monday, May 19, 2025

I cannot believe that tomorrow is the last day of school. Where did the time go?!!! I want to give a ginormous THANK YOU to the Weiss Family for hosting our 6th grade/ end of year celebration and also sponsoring the lifeguard and pizza lunch. It was extremely special and fun! Also, a big thank you to all the parents who helped drive students to and from the party, and contributed with snacks, drinks, desserts for the party.

I also want to give a big thank you to parents who really stepped up and helped our class this year in either generous donations,  volunteering your time to present, chaperoning fieldtrips and overnights, and just providing a community of support for both Ms. Shawn and me throughout this school year. Honestly, it does take a village to raise a child and knowing that we are all on the same team supporting one another is what matters most. So, thank you!!!!

Class Happenings

Students presented their last animal research projects and their favorite writing samples from this school year. The class also did some deep cleaning and cleared out their cubbies today, so your child should have come home with a bag of all their class notebooks, and items. We spent this afternoon doing a few community building games.

Tomorrow will be a fun day, we will hand out class awards, have a farewell ceremony to one of our student's and our 6th graders, and enjoy the talent show.

Summer Homework

Today, summer homework was passed out, 4th and 5th graders got their summer homework from me and 6th graders received theirs from the middle school. Make sure to review the expectations with your student. Here is a live link to the reading list that student’s should pick a book from to do ONE project on, https://k-12readinglist.com/reading-lists-for-elementary-school-children/

Please make sure to look in your child's folder with the different letters and expectations for homework this summer.

Talent Show

E2 talent show will be held tomorrow from 9-10:30am

Early Dismissal

Tomorrow is early dismissal for the last day of school at 11:30am. Please make sure if your child had not already taken their bag of class notebooks, items, etc. home today, that they bring it home tomorrow.

Lost and Found

Make sure to remind your student to check the lost and found for any missing items. All left over items in the lost and found will be donated.

This is my last Newsflash for this School Year!! Have a beautiful and blessed summer full of fun, relaxation and family time!!!

Class Happenings

I cannot believe the last day of school is already going to be here next Tuesday, where has the time gone?! This week students are working on their writing samples, we will be doing a Writers Cafe, where students will share their favorite writing samples with one another. We will have juice and little bites to snack on.  We will also be doing some reading and math practice.

Saint Mary's Food Drive

We have a few students that are passionate about wanting to help the hungry. They are really wanting to set a goal of reaching about 1000 canned goods before the school year ends. All they are hoping for is that each student bring in about 2+ canned food to help their cause. A flyer will be going home to help support these kids and there will be boxes in carline and by the classrooms to drop off the canned goods.

6th Grade Going Out

This Thursday, May 15th, the 6th graders will be going on their 6th grade Going Out to Jakes Unlimited. We handed out permission slips for this fieldtrip about 2-3 weeks ago. If your child has not turned it in, please make sure they do by Wed. We will need 1-2 parent chaperones to drive and can either stay or just drop off and pick up. We will leave campus at 10am and return between 2 &2:30. Please contact me if you are able to take some of the 6th graders. I am able to drive 4 kids, but we have (9) 6th graders total.

Camp Surf

We survived the overnight and we had a blast!! The kids were so well behaved, truly got along with each other while also making new friends and seemed to enjoy the activities Camp Surf had to offer. I am attaching a link of pictures taken during the overnight.  Also, a BIG thank you to the parents who chaperoned the trip.  Chaperoning these trips really take a lot of time, energy and patience, so we are so truly grateful for each and every person who helped make the trip a success.

Students are still working hard and I am so proud of the positive energy they are bring each and every day. I know that they are checked out, but I am still pushing them to end the school year strong. They are currently working on writing a descriptive story about Paul Revere and the stories I have heard so far are incredible with a major focus on colorful descriptive words and figurative language. Students are also studying American Revolution and investigating internal and external angles of different polygons.

Next week, May 12-14th I want to end the school year on a fun note and I am going to have a class kickball game on Monday, May 12th and on Tuesday, May 13th I want to have writers cafe where students will get to share their favorite writing samples from the school year with one another, while enjoying mini pastries, treats, and tea.
