November 18th Newsflash

Hello Families,

I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and another break is quickly approaching—these kiddos have been working so hard! Please read below for important information about what’s happening in our class this week.

Homework Information

Homework Expectations

Nightly homework should take about 60 minutes, which includes:

  • Reading
  • Math practice
  • Any unfinished classwork

If your child has questions about their math assignment, please write a note on the homework for me to review. You may also use the solutions manual for support.

If homework is taking longer than 60 minutes, please notify me by email.

Missed Homework & Catch-Up Procedures

If your child misses an assignment due to an unexpected conflict, they must catch up the following night along with the new homework to avoid receiving a “No Homework” slip.

We offer Study Hall from 11:30–12:00 for occasional missed assignments.
If you prefer your child not to attend, please email me at [email protected].

We also hold mandatory Friday afternoon catch-up for any student who has missed homework during the week.

Our homework aligns with the AASA test, and consistent completion strongly supports student success.

If Homework Is Missed:

  • 1–2 missing assignments: “No Homework” slip sent home
  • 3–4 missing assignments: Student calls parents to establish a catch-up plan
  • 5+ missing assignments: Elementary Director will reach out to develop a plan

Regular homework completion reinforces concepts, builds strong study habits, and supports long-term academic growth.

Message from Admin: “Fill the Gap Food Drive”

Dear Villa Community,

We need your help! No child should try to learn while hungry. With changes in SNAP benefits affecting some families, we want to ensure every student has enough food to thrive.

We are collecting non-perishable breakfast and lunch items to distribute to students in need. Donations can be dropped off at the Admin Office, at carline, or sent with your child labeled for the “Fill the Gap Food Drive.”

If your family is experiencing food insecurity, please let your child’s teacher know or use the confidential link provided by the school to request support. Responses will only be shared with our family support staff to ensure discretion and care.

To everyone able to give—thank you for your generosity.
As we always say, it truly takes a VILLAge!

📋 Parent Questions – Questions Answered

Q: How can my child have leadership opportunities?
A: We will hold class elections for roles like President, Vice President, and Mediator. Students can also join Friday clubs or volunteer in younger classrooms, the library, or specials like music and computer science.

Q: How do you challenge advanced math students?
A: Students are assessed in August. If they master concepts quickly, they may join a higher-level math group or even test into Ms. Clare’s advanced math class. Online enrichment resources are also available for practice at home and in class.

Q: How are math lessons conducted?
A: Most lessons are by grade level, but students sometimes work in small groups or individually depending on their needs. Students complete 3 math practice cards weekly and receive additional support from Ms. Clare if needed.

Q: How do students resolve conflicts?
A: Students may choose to talk it out with a mediator, meet in a courageous conversation with support, or bring issues to a class meeting for group resolution.

Q: What are the Specials?

  • Monday AM – Science with Ms. Emily and PE with Coach EJ’s team
  • Wednesday PM – PE, Art, Computer Science, or Music

Q: What are the homework expectations?
A: Students complete one math lesson daily (parents initial work) and 20 minutes of reading. Students behind in work may attend study hall during recess or a Friday homework session with Ms. Clare.

⭐ Additional Parent Questions

Q: How do you help students who struggle with reading fluency or comprehension?
A: Students receive small group reading instruction, fluency practice, and guided reading time. I also provide strategies like rereading passages, summarizing, and partner reading. Families can support by listening to their child read aloud at home.

Q: What happens if my child finishes work early?
A: Students always have extension choices such as independent reading, enrichment packets, online programs, or creative writing. This ensures that learning time is used productively.

Q: How can parents best support learning at home?
A: The most important things are to check math lessons daily, ensure 20 minutes of reading happens each night, and encourage your child to talk about what they learned that day. This helps them process and connect learning.

Q: How do you encourage students to stay organized?
A: Students use agendas and “Big Picture” work plans to track weekly assignments. I model time management strategies and check in with students during silent work time to help them stay on track.

Newsflash on Classroom Updates, Positive Beginnings and Important Reminders, August 12, 2025

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It’s hard to believe we have already completed our first full week of school! In just seven days, the students have begun building new routines, forming connections with classmates, and immersing themselves in meaningful work.

The energy in our classroom is bright, and I am truly excited for the year ahead.
I’d like to take a moment to emphasize the importance of trusting the process. Each school year brings a period of transition—new grade level, new peers, and a new teacher. This is a natural part of growth, and when viewed through the lens of Maria Montessori’s Four Planes of Development, we can see just how meaningful this time is. Our students are in the Second Plane (ages 6–12), a stage marked by the blossoming of reasoning skills, independence, social awareness, and an eagerness to explore ideas in depth. Moving from E1 to E2, or joining a new environment, requires time, patience, and support—but it is also filled with opportunities for tremendous growth.

Already, in this short time, I have seen so many moments of curiosity, perseverance, and teamwork. This week, our work has included:
  • Shelf Picks – choosing a shelf and exploring the materials in depth to develop understanding.
  • Postcard Project – blending creativity with written expression and communication skills.
  • Multiples and Factors – strengthening foundational math concepts.
  • Functions of Words – beginning tomorrow to deepen grammar study.
Tomorrow, students will also receive Reading Logs. Our goal is for students to read at least 20 minutes per evening, five days per week (a total of 100 minutes weekly), with a parent’s signature to confirm. This daily habit builds not just skills but a love for reading.

I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Katie Banovich, our Classroom Coordinator. Her support is invaluable, and I am grateful to have her partner with us this year.

Building a Positive Learning Environment
Today, our wonderful Vice Principal for E2 visited to speak with the students about our school-wide behavior expectations. These guidelines help ensure our campus remains a safe, respectful, and welcoming place for everyone. I encourage you to talk with your child at home about how these expectations apply both in the classroom and in all areas of our school. When we partner together—school and home—we create the conditions for every student to thrive.

Attendance Matters
Consistent attendance plays a key role in a student’s success. If your child will be absent, please notify the school before or on the day of the absence using one of these methods:
For personal days/vacation plans, please contact our Director, Ms. Margo O’Neil, at [email protected]. If you need another copy of the Parent Orientation packet, just let me know—I’m happy to provide one.

Pizza Friday in Morgan's Class
The results are in—Barro’s Pizza won our class vote! They offer cheese, pepperoni, and vegan options. All pizza details, including pricing, can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zmy5dqkQ6dUDHQ0Q2CFa3CUBjjP-XFeK9iML2CzKMyc/edit?tab=t.0

Pizza Friday in Morgan’s Class Dear Parents, We’re excited to announce that Pizza Friday will be returning this year, starting on Friday, August 29th! Each Friday, delicious pizza will be delivered to our students for a fun and tasty lunch tradition. To accompany the pizza, we kindly ask famil...

Looking Ahead: Goal-Setting Conferences
While you are always welcome to schedule a meeting by emailing [email protected] at least one week in advance, we will soon begin scheduling our Student Goal-Setting Conferences occurring in September.  These meetings will allow us to review your child’s academic progress, celebrate their strengths, and collaborate on a personalized plan to support their learning journey for the year ahead. By working together, we can set clear, achievable goals that help each child reach their fullest potential.

I am deeply grateful for the trust and partnership you bring to our classroom. This is already shaping up to be a wonderful year, and I know our shared commitment will help each student shine. Thank you for all you do—we could not do it without you!

Warmly,
Morgan Enderson

  • Label all supplies (water bottles, lunchboxes, jackets, etc.).
  • Establish routines at home for bedtime, reading time, and organizing school materials.
  • Encourage independence. Let your child be responsible for carrying their backpack, turning in homework, and preparing for the day.

Together, we can make this year successful and joyful!

Happy first week of school!
This has been a wonderful but busy week. Students got their supplies sorted, and we were able to go over class expectations and goals. This week has been filled with student assessments, team building, student mentor groups, and some work time.

For new 4th-grade students, the E2 process differs from E1, but with patience and time, it becomes easier. I'm also counting on our 5th and 6th graders to step into leadership roles by mentoring and leading by example.

🧡 Classroom Coordinator
We are so lucky to have Katie Banovich as our classroom coordinator this year! She is wonderful and plays an essential role in helping our classroom run smoothly.
This parent helps with weekly classroom emails, supports the teacher's webpage, and assists with any classroom tasks involving communication or getting all parents involved. Katie is a fantastic resource who helps ensure the office, teachers, and parents stay on the same page.
Feel free to reach out to her directly at [email protected] — she’s happy to connect with you!

📌 Reminders
  • Drop-Off: Only students in the Circle program should arrive before 7:45 am. General drop-off is between 7:45 and 8:30 am.
  • Pick-Up: Between 3:00 and 3:30 pm.
  • Morning Independence: Please help your child practice exiting the car with their belongings on their own.
  • Campus Visits: All visitors must check in at the front office and wear a badge—this includes after-school hours.
  • Carline Courtesy: Refrain from cell phone use, use designated drop-off spots only (no pickups on Meadowbrook Ave.), and be mindful of walkers. It gets smoother each day!

Back-to-School Supplies

I’m thrilled for the new school year and so excited to begin this journey with your children! While I will be out of town for training in Boston and unable to attend the upcoming school-wide Open House, I’ve already had the opportunity to hold my Open House earlier this summer.

Families are still warmly welcome to visit Room #207 to drop off school supplies.

The classroom will be open for supply drop-off on Friday, August 1, between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.

If you have any questions or would like to say hello before the first day, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I’ll be checking messages regularly and will respond within 24 business hours.

Thank you so much for your support and partnership. I'm genuinely looking forward to a joyful, engaging, and triumphant school year together!

Summer Homework

Please ensure your child starts the school year off on the right foot, feeling prepared and ready. Summer homework will be collected on the first day of school. If your child attended an academic camp or completed any online math lessons (for specific students, I assigned online math), please let me know, and I will count that as part of their math summer homework. The online math was optional.

We will begin book talks in the first week of school; this will be the time when your child will give a brief presentation on the book report project they chose to complete over the summer.

Below, I have attached the links for the math summer homework in case anyone has misplaced theirs. I will also attach the book report project options for anyone who needs them.

Parent Volunteering

Suppose you are interested in volunteering as a parent in any capacity. In that case, whether assisting in the classroom, on campus, or as a driving chaperone, you will need to ensure that all parent volunteer forms and documents are completed and submitted. I recommend that everyone complete all necessary documentation, just in case, so that the process of volunteering runs smoothly.

If you completed these documents last year, you will need to complete them again for this year. Unfortunately, the forms do not carry over from one year to the next.

Listed below are all the links needed for the parent volunteering.
