Stone Soup + Movie Day

Dear Parents,

I recently read a book called “Stone Soup” to the children. It’s a story about happiness, working together, and giving your own gifts for all to prosper. I have asked students to bring in items so we can make our own stone soup. Monday 11/24, we will all sit together and enjoy the meal as a community family.

The children will get a lesson on place settings, tablescape, and napkin folds. I am all set with volunteers.

Volunteers are Annie, Angela, and Kylie. Please arrive no later than 9:30am. Thank you in advance for your help.

Tuesday 11/25 is movie + pj day. The children can bring in one small blanket/sleeping bag, and one small stuffy.

Villa Off-Site Permission Slip

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Next week, our elementary classes will participate in Safety Week. During this important week, students will learn about the various safety drills we conduct throughout the year and practice the steps involved in each.

As part of our safety training, each class will take part in an off-site evacuation drill, walking to designated rally points within the neighborhood. This exercise helps ensure that students and staff are prepared in the event of a real emergency requiring evacuation from campus.

Please complete and return the permission slip below to allow your child to participate in the off-site evacuation drill. Please return this slip Monday, September 8, 2025.

August Update

Dear Parents,

The children are settling in well and are still adjusting to both their new schedule and responsibilities.
I have given 4 out of 5 of the Montessori Great Lessons:
1. The Universe Story
2. The Timeline of Life
3. The Coming of Humans
4. The History of Writing

I have completed the majority of all beginning of the year assessments, which is what helps inform my instruction.
We have started WTW, math lessons, math facts, spelling, writing groups, ELA grammar lessons, geometry, and writing.
We either have an ART Masterpiece lesson on Fridays (after specials), or Author's Circle (or both, depending on time).

I will post a picture of Author's Circle shortly. This is a great opportunity for children to create meaningful and beautiful work. I participate in this as well.

This month we will have goal setting conferences, either myself or Sara will send out a sign up soon-so be on the look out. This conference is a child lead conference, where your child will go over their academic and personal goals for the year. a

I hope you all have a wonderful week!!

Cheers,

Ms. Molly

Charlotte shared a beautiful poem during Author's Circle. Everyone LOVED it!

3rd Graders (going into 4th): Summer Homework

Dear Parents (of 3rd graders going into 4th),

In this folder there are 5 weeks’ worth of homework assignments to be completed over the summer. Students will turn their folder with completed assignments into a designated bin in the classroom when they come back to school on the first day.

The folder also contains an answer key for parents. Please remove this and keep it handy. The answer key provides the correct answers to the problems and also shows the solutions to some of them. The aligning state standard is noted beside most of the problems’ answers as reference. There are some problems, however, that do not have the state standard listed because they are not directly addressing a standard.

We are asking that parents check their child’s math answers and write a note if their child is having difficulty with a particular problem or concept and then sign the page. Students should also work to master their math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Ideally, they would enter fourth grade with those facts mastered.

In addition to the math work, students are asked to read two books of their choice and keep a reading log. Students should choose a book from the list within this link https://k-12readinglist.com/reading-lists-for-elementary-school-children/.

Upon returning to school, students will present a project about one of books they read. Book project guidelines are enclosed in the homework folder.

Please spread the homework over the entire summer rather than waiting until the last few weeks.

Our experience has taught us that there is less regression and time needed for recoupment when students practice math and reading over the summer months. And, as the adage goes, Practice makes permanent!

Sincerely,

Christy Cantu

Elementary Director

State Testing Dates and Practice Test Information

Dear Third Grade Parents,

State Testing begins next week for our students. Please help ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and brings a refillable water bottle for proper hydration. Monday is not a test day, but I will be reviewing sample tests in preparation for their writing portion, which will be on Tuesday.

Here is a link to the Villa Calendar and testing schedule: https://www.villamontessori.com/apps/events/2025/4/?id=0

It is really important for your child to be at school on:
  • March 31
  • April 1
  • April 2
  • April 15
  • April 17

These are the testing dates.  We have the whole day to take the tests so please do not plan on late arrivals or early pick-ups.

If you would like to do the sample tests with your child at home, here is the link: https://az.testnav.com/client/index.html NOTE: there is no user name or pass. You simply click on the “mic check & sample tests” button under the big blue “sign in" button.

Reach out to me with any questions. Cheers, Ms. Molly

South America Presentations & Sign-Ups

Just a reminder that students should be working on their South America presentations at home to ensure they are prepared to present in class. Presentations will be held the first two weeks in May.

Presentation sign-ups are available here: Sign Up Here. Parents are invited to attend their child’s presentation, so please choose a time that works for you if you’d like to be there. However, even if you are unable to attend, you still need to sign up, as every student is required to present.

The children have chosen topics for their South America presentations.

Presentations will begin in late April/early May. I will create a sign-up genius with 15-minute time slots.

The presentation packet I sent home with your child is a tool to assist with their presentation. It’s their choice if they would like to use it or not. They do not need to turn that into me. I do not require students to complete a certain number of notes cards. I just ask that they become “experts” on their topic.

Requirements

  • All students should have a tri-fold board for display, a 3-D model, and be prepared to present in front of their peers.
  • 1st years: turn in notecards to me
  • 2nd years: turn in notecards + final draft (this can be handwritten or typed)
  • 3rd years: turn in notecards, written rough draft, and typed paper.
