Classroom Updates!

Welcome to Room 215 :)

I am looking forward to seeing everyone Monday, August 4th.

To help you feel more prepared for our first day of school, please read the following information.

Open House
With summer coming to an end in a couple of weeks, Ms. Lilyanne and I would like to invite you to our class Open House on Friday, August 1st between 11am-12pm. This is a great opportunity for your child to come say hello and mingle and also organize and put together their school supplies. All students are invited. Hope to see you there!

Summer Homework
Please make sure your child starts the school year off on the right foot where they feel prepared and ready. Summer homework will be collected on the first day of school. If your child attended an academic camp or completed alternative math work, please let me know and I will count that as part of their math summer homework.

We will begin book talks the first week of school, this will be the time in which your child will give a brief presentation on the book report project they chose to complete this summer.

Below are the links for the math summer homework in case anyone misplaced theirs. I will also attach the book report project options for anyone who needs it.

Parent Orientation
Please mark your calendars for parent orientation that will take place on Thursday, Aug. 7th from 6:30-7:30. It is important that at least one parent attends this orientation so that you are aware of important class and school information that will be pertinent to this school year.

Pizza Friday
We will continue our Pizza Friday tradition this school year. Pizza Friday will start Friday, August 29th. If you would like your child to participate in Pizza Friday, please return the Pizza Friday form with payment on or before August 22nd. Half payment ($75) or Full payment ($150) can be made out by check to Kaitlyn Shaw, cash is preferred.

If you need to make different payment arrangements or if there is any financial hardship, please reach out to me via email [email protected].

Parent Volunteering
If you are looking to be a parent volunteer in any capacity, whether helping out in the classroom, on campus, or as driving chaperone, you will need to make sure all parent volunteer forms and documents are completed and turned in. I recommend that everyone complete all documentation just in case, so that it makes the process of volunteering much smoother.

If you completed these documents last year, you will need to complete it again for this year. Unfortunately, the forms do not carry over year to year.

Listed below, are all the links needed for the parent volunteering.

Parent Volunteer Forms

Instructions for Fingerprint Clearance Card

Chaperone Agreement Form

Parent Volunteer Application

Volunteer Criminal Affidavit

Volunteer Motor Vehicle Affidavit

What to bring the first day of school!

  • 1 picture of a special memory from summer
  • summer Homework: math and book report
  • supplies (if missed open house)
  • backpack
  • water bottle
  • lunch

Important Note:
Food Allergies – We have a student with a severe sesame/tahini allergy that I want to alert you to.   I’ve reached out to the parents for clarification and have some tips and guidelines that should be helpful when packing lunches.
  •       NO items with the label “may contain sesame seeds”
  •       NO Dave’s Killer Bread - it does or may contain sesame
  •       NO hummus with tahini – Some hummus brands are made with no tahini/sesame and would be safe to pack
  •       NO Everything Bagels – has sesame seeds
  •       NO Everything Pretzel Chips (Costco) – has sesame seeds
For school lunch items AND donated school snacks:
Please provide packaged items with labels of ingredients (or email me a photo of the ingredients list) so we can double check – hummus,  granola bars, protein bars, etc. These items need to be checked so we can ensure they are safe to be eaten in class.

If we are unable to verify the ingredients, we will err on safety and ask the student to please take it home to eat.  Providing labels would be extremely helpful in preventing this from happening.

Dear Parents,

I have been enjoying meeting with everyone at conferences. The students put a lot of time and effort into preparing for their conference.

Below are a few updates:

  • Valentine’s Sale and Dance: Our class will be selling Valentine’s on Wednesday, February 11. We will be in carline starting at 7:45am . The school is hosting a Valentine’s friends and family dance afterschool on Friday, February 13th. A flyer went home last week with more information and a QR code to purchase tickets.

  • Space Exploration: Students are working on a space exploration project. The project needs to be completed by February 6, and presentations will be held throughout the following week.

  • Booktalk: This month’s booktalk is due Friday, January 30th.  Students need to complete a timeline and answer questions from the form. Next month’s booktalk is science fiction. We will return to the standard Progressive Booktalk Form for the science fiction read.

  • We are well into our new novel Rover. The students have been enjoying the story, which is based on two real life rovers that were sent to Mars, Perseverance and Curiosity. The students are taking tests to monitor comprehension. Our second test will be this week – the tests are open book and open note, and students can make corrections to improve their scores as well.

  • Art History Fair: Notecards were due today. Students should have a total of 41 notecards that will be turned in on the same day their rough drafts are due. Rough drafts and 41+ notecards are due February 9th. Students will be given a lesson on how to turn notecards into a rough draft and how to cite sources within their writing.
