OCTOBER BOOK TALK for the Month of October

Students will have their reading log and Book Talk rubric with them today to help guide their reading and preparation.

Book Talk Due & Presented in Class: October 30

Choosing Your Book

Suggested Genre: Realistic Fiction

If you do not have a Realistic Fiction book at home, you may choose another genre.

You may also use a book you are already reading. If you are already in the middle of a book, that is completely fine. You do not need to start a new book.

While You Read

Use your reading log to keep track of your reading and important details from your book.

Think about:

  • Who are the important characters?
  • Where does the story take place?
  • What is the main problem or conflict?
  • What are some important events?
  • What is the main idea or message?
  • What did you like about the book?
  • Would you recommend the book to a classmate? Why?

Book Talk Presentation

Students will present their Book Talk to the class on October 30.

Your Book Talk rubric will help you know what to include in your presentation and how you will be assessed.

Remember: If you are already in the middle of a book, you can use that book for your Book Talk. You do not need to start a new book.

IXL Homework: Students are starting their nightly IXL homework tonight.

Each week, your child will be assigned skills to practice on IXL.

The goal is for students to reach a SmartScore of at least 80 on each assigned concept.

How Does My Child Find Their Homework?

Go to https://www.ixl.com/signin/villamontessori

Login with your student's information.

Once logged in make sure students are in the ‘My IXL’ tab on the far left.

Then click the ‘From Your Teacher’ tab.

Click the assigned skills to begin practice.

Students will be assigned new lessons weekly and will need to work on the assigned lessons nightly for at least 20 minutes.

If students complete all of their “From Your Teacher’ skills, they should then work on the ‘Recommendations’ skills.

The 20-Minute Rule

We do NOT want homework to become frustrating or overwhelming!

If your child is having difficulty reaching a SmartScore of 80 on a concept and has been actively working on that concept for 20 minutes, please have them STOP.

It is okay if they did not reach an 80! This lets me know that your child may need some additional support with that skill, and we can work on it together at school.

What If My Child Gets Stuck?

IXL has some great built-in resources to help students when they are having difficulty.

Students can select:

“Learn with an Example” – IXL will walk them through an example of the skill.

“Watch a Video” – Students can watch a short lesson explaining the concept.

Please encourage your child to use these resources when needed!

 Show Your Work!

Students should use a notebook or scrap paper to work out their math problems.

Please monitor at home, they will not bring notebook to school. This allows me to see their thinking and better understand where they may need additional help.

Parents, Your Job Just Got a Little Easier!

The great news is that you do NOT need to correct your child's math homework!

IXL will provide immediate feedback and let your child know whether their answers are correct.

Your most important job is simply to provide support and encouragement as your child completes their daily math practice.

Please remember, progress and understanding are more important than frustration. If your child has truly worked on a concept for 20 minutes and is struggling to reach an 80 SmartScore, have them stop and bring their work (notebook or scrap work paper) to school so I can help.

Please email me at [email protected], with any questions about the new homework program.

Students will also continue to read 20 minutes a night and fill out their reading log.

Our First Day Virtue Rock Activity
One of our first activities today was creating our Virtue Rocks. Each student decorated a rock and chose a virtue that represents something they would like to bring into our classroom this year.

This activity gave students an opportunity to think about the kind of classroom community we want to create together and the qualities we want to practice throughout the year.

Learning Our Classroom Procedures
Today we also began learning our classroom procedures and routines. Over the next several days, students will continue practicing how to:
  • Begin their morning work
